Minutes

Welcome: Melinda Rosevear

Noted that minutes from the October 5, SCC meeting were approved online.

The Bylaws of the Quail Hollow School Community Council have been updated and were reviewed by the members present. The Bylaws now comply with the Utah Annotated Code and are in line with CSD policies. The motion to approve: Cherie S., 2nd Samantha A. passed with a note that formatting editorial changes still need to be made on the document.

A discussion about the safety of students using the walkway that exits the school field to Cobblestone Way was held. Members wished a traffic calming device could be put in as new sidewalk is poured to deter students, bikers and others to slow down as they approach Cobblestone Way. Samantha will contact Jason Bangerter, adjacent property owner, to find out the name of the individual in Sandy City he is working with.

Update: November 9, 1:48 pm. Samantha Avery has spoken with Tim Welsh and Sandy City Inspector, Dave Marble, about a bollard post. She was then referred to the Transportation Engineer, Britney Ward. Britney has been to that walkway before. The walkway is six feet wide. ADA laws require four feet of open sidewalk, so a post cannot be put in there. Also, since this is not an official drop off/pick-up area, they cannot put up No Parking signs. She did recommend that a police officer or school leader train the approximately thirty children who use this walkway on safety skills, also speaking  to drivers of cars that routinely stop there. Melinda Rosevear spent two days last year handing out a safe place to cross information flyer. This may have to be done routinely every year.

Shad reviewed the School Safety Plan with SCC members. Most of the areas of concern have been addressed by the Council over the past year. Internet safety is our number one priority. Much of the problem is what students are looking at and sharing with others before and after school hours, not during class time. The Council planned a workshop on Digital Safety for February 1, 2022, Parents will be shown how to use the Parental Controls available on various types of devices. Melinda will secure some people to present information to us. The workshop may have to be live streamed, depending on the Covid situation.

Our second area of concern is Social Emotional Learning. Our SCC supports the Second Step program being questioned by Canyons District. Most elementary principals are also in favor of the materials in Second Step. Our SCC does not support the District trying to develop its own curriculum. (Note: The Second Step curriculum is on the agenda for the CSD Board Meeting this evening.)

Minutes of our October meeting need to be posted on the school website. Shad will contact Janora Jara about this.

Patrons enjoyed the outdoor Halloween parade this year, SCC supports continuing this routine. Outdoor music would make this even more fun. The live stream worked nicely also.

The annual Christmas Sing-Along will also follow an outdoor caroling format. Shad will talk to Liz Longaker about the use of a keyboard.

Motion to adjourn at 9:10am by Pat P, seconded by Samantha A, passed.
