Minutes

 Welcome: Melinda Rosevear

Minutes from the January 13 meeting were approved online.

We discussed the Digital Safety Parent Night that the SCC sponsored held on February 1, 2022. Some disappointment was expressed about the presentation by the substitute speaker from Digital Respons-Ability. We had 25 people in person and another 25 online that night. Mr.DeMill said there have been 188 views of the program since it was done. Parents are at different stages of knowledge on this topic. We discussed follow-up ideas including our newsletter suggesting the two helpful websites: Children and Screens plus Protect Young Eyes. Shad may scan the handouts from the program that contain good suggestions. Digital Respons-Ability will return to Quail Hollow the week of March 14 to present their programs to our students.

Our school counselor, Mr. Lennox, presented an outline of the types of services he provides for Quail Hollow Students. All students are learning about positive character traits as he does routine classroom visits. He also has initiated some lunchroom and playground competitions to encourage positive behavior choices. A select population of children meet with him in small groups to work on behavior skills with their parents’ permission. A professional representative from Project Connections works with a few children needing more help. Mr. Lennox could use the SCC support with getting a Peace Path put in the empty “lunch” hall. A bulletin board might also be helpful there for a sensory activity. The SRSS-IE indicates there are a few children in each classroom who need help with externalized and/or internalized behaviors.

Mr. DeMill presented the mid-year testing data results. Mathematics scores have tended to remain stable. Some grades show a slight drop in reading skills. Face coverings worn during the Covid outbreak hamper the ability of some children to see how sounds and words are formed as we speak. The BLT will review this testing and recommend goals for 2022-23 based on the needs of the incoming students. Mr. DeMill will look at the pre-Covid trends from Quail Hollow to observe differences in testing results compared to current scores. The SCC would like Digital wellness to be part of the school climate goal.

Mr. DeMill continues to look for qualified applicants to work as intervention aides to assist students. He also tries to offer a stipend to aides and teachers who work as substitutes during their free time.

The school needs a social-emotional learning program to help students have a set of tools and language to describe their feelings and problem solve situations. The school’s BLT is looking at some options.

The district will adopt the Wonders reading curriculum for next year. It will be paired with a phonics program 95% Core for language arts skills.

Motion to adjourn at 9:20am by Samantha, 2nd Cherie, Passed
